The film's groundbreaking special effects, memorable score by John Williams, and universal themes of friendship, trust, and saying goodbye resonated with audiences worldwide, earning over $792 million at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time until 1993.

In 2022, to mark the 40th anniversary of this beloved classic, Niue partnered with Universal Studios and the New Zealand Mint to create a series of officially licensed commemorative coins.
